What is better PVDF (KYNAR) versus SMP (Siliconized Modified Polyesters)
Both PVDF and SMP paint systems are good. However, in a roofing application where the roof is facing the sun, PVDF paints perform better in gloss retention and color retention. What that means is 7 years down the road, you’re not likely be able to notice a color change. With SMP paint, you may notice chalking, like a white milky layer. While both systems are fully warranted and in some cases like wall panel the SMP system performs well because of not being angled to the sun, a PVDF system is still the best system out there.
Aluminum or steel?
While a vast majority of metal roofing is steel, aluminum traditionally has its place in applications near brackish water, specific environments and systems. Aluminum is often specified in applications and we can deliver both.
Why is metal roof better than shingles?
People often ask what the downsides of metal roofs are and I always say the same thing: You better like the color because you just bought your last roof your home will need and it isn’t going anywhere for a very long time. As more and more people choose metal roofs, they see the value. As more and more people install these systems the pricing is now in line with shingle roofs while giving much better performance and value.
Galvanized versus Galvalume?
Both are excellent materials and provide protection to the steel which it protects. We choose to use Galvalume on our premium products PVDF because it performs better for rust protection and to an extent provides some self-healing. Other suppliers use Galvanized under PVDF. One reason they may do this is pricing and availability of Galvanized material. There is more galvanized capacity available than galvalume domestically. We choose to use what we feel is the superior product, offering the best to our customers.
